Something for everyone

The exhibition features work which exemplifies one of Periscopio's main cornerstones: variety.

Occasionally we are asked what the general theme or common denominator of our different editions has been, and our reply is always the same: it is totally open. The only condition for begin chosen is that the work be of high quality and of interest to the public. Two objectives are thus achieved: to dignify and create awareness of the photojournalists' efforts, while at the same time providing the public with totally distinct offerings, therefore making the whole even more attractive. The 2011 collection sparkles with glamour, and includes a collection of portraits commissioned by Vanity Fair, which reflect Peter Dench's subtle humor, while contrasting with the reflexive beauty of China as seen in the Reuters collection. Once again, as in previous editions, crude reality is also evident, such as the spring revolutions across the Arab world as seen from the sidelines, or the violent outbreaks in Caracas and the startling images from the World Press Photo Contest. Also presented are the vital reflections of certain urban classes which are virtually unknown to the general public and historical photos by the master Santos Yubero, who takes us into daily Spanish life between 1925 and 1975.

We also would like to take the opportunity to remember the journalists who died during the past year in the line of work. Libya, Mexico, and Afghanistan proved fatal for several professionals. We would like to pay homage to them.

What about the effects of the crisis? Well, they seem to getting worse and worse. Several well-known professionals, with many years of experience under their belts, have confessed that they have seriously considered changing professions due to the difficulties involved in making a living as a press photographer. They are exploring other horizons, although they know they can never fully abandon photojournalism.
